When buying jewellery, we are often guided by aesthetics as well as visual values. We forget how important the material from which it is made is. Especially if we struggle with skin allergies, which are common nowadays. To avoid disappointment and the unpleasant consequences of allergy, we will suggest what to look for when choosing jewellery for allergy sufferers.

Why can jewellery be allergenic?

Why can jewellery cause allergies? The culprit is primarily nickel. It is estimated that around 15% of the population is allergic to this metal. Sensitisation is much more common in women than in men. Some see a correlation between hormonal disorders, abnormal iron metabolism and allergy to this chemical element. Severe allergic reactions are reaching an increasing number of people worldwide, including even young 5-year-old children. The problem has been recognised by both the WHO and the European Union, which has introduced a restriction on the use of nickel in jewellery materials. Strict standards have been introduced that allow for the degree of nickel release from an item that comes into contact with the skin. This is as low as 0.5µg/cm2 per week and as low as 0.2µg/cm2 per week for pins. The European Committee for Standardisation can commission control tests to verify that companies comply with Commission Regulation (EC) No 552/2009 of 22 June 2009.

Is there jewellery that is non-allergenic?

Is there jewellery that is non-allergenic? Fortunately, yes, there is. The key to selection is to choose the right material from which it is made. It is assumed that gold and silver should not be allergenic. It is worth remembering, however, that the sample is crucial in this case. If we opt for products made of silver, we should choose the sample 925. It contains as much as 92.5 per cent of pure metal, and the rest is made of other metals which are supposed to positively influence the durability and hardness of the alloy. The situation is similar with gold. However, we should bear in mind that gold in its pure form is very soft, so the content of other metals in the alloy must be slightly higher. The best choice is sample 585 (best value for money) or 750 (slightly more expensive), which is, however, more susceptible to damage and deformation.

An excellent choice for allergy sufferers is also jewellery made from titanium, whose characteristics include lightness and a matt finish. Pure titanium is 100% anti-allergenic. Interestingly, only 0.1 per cent of allergic reactions have been reported. Another material that not only the jewellery industry but also the medical industry is keen to use is stainless steel, known as surgical steel. Despite its nickel and chromium content, it is safe; according to studies, the amount of nickel that enters the body in 316L stainless steel is just 0.01 μg/cm²/week. To date, only 0.1 per cent of allergic reactions to this metal have been found. Keep in mind, however, that even the most anti-allergic material can cause a skin reaction under certain conditions. Avoid wearing jewellery in the sauna, during exercise or on hot days. When exposed to heat, the skin sweats and is more susceptible to abrasions, damage.

Bonore gold jewellery - the elegant choice for allergy sufferers

Bonore is a brand specialising in the creation of exclusive bullion jewellery. The vast majority of the brand's products are made from 585 gold - what does this mean? The content of pure bullion in the alloy is as high as 58.5%. This makes sample 585 gold durable and hard. We should add that pure gold is too soft and malleable, which is why it is mixed with other metals. Gold of this grade should also not be allergenic, which is important information for allergy sufferers. If you're after high-quality women's jewellery, choose that made from 585 gold. Among its wide range of products, Bonore has chains, pendants, necklaces, bracelets and a whole range of rings, including engagement rings with diamonds.
