Swiss watch brand Luminox launched its new Atacama Field 1960 series of timepieces in February this year. The name of the line refers, of course, to the Atacama Desert, which is located in Chile and is one of the driest areas in the world. The new series, with its textured dial finish, evokes precisely the harsh desert landscape. These high-performance, super readable and rugged watches are designed for exploring the most hostile environments.

  • Luminox has unveiled its latest line of Atacama Field 1960 watches.
  • Inspired by field watches, the model is characterised by its ruggedness and high functionality.
  • It is available in three dial colour versions.

Field watch at its best - Luminox Atacama Field 1960

The field watch rose to prominence during the First World War due to soldiers' need for reliable and portable timepieces. Trench warfare required instant legibility and accurate timekeeping, with watches needing to be compact enough to be worn on the wrist. Given the harsh conditions in the field, timepieces had to be resistant to water and shock. Such demand created the distinctive 'Field' style of field watch, which is rugged and practical. Today's Luminox Atacama Field 1960 timepiece shares these qualities and retains a utilitarian and efficient design.

TheLuminox Atacama Field 1960 is the epitome of a field watch. It is characterised by a clean design with a large dial featuring 12 and 24-hour time markers, tritium tubes on the linear indexes, hour and minute hands, a red-tipped seconds hand and a red arrow for increased legibility placed next to the day-of-the-month date stamp located at 3 o'clock. Luminox Light technology ensures visibility in all lighting conditions (or in the complete absence of light) for up to 25 years. The dial is protected from damage by sapphire glass with anti-reflective coating.

Luminox's latest watch features a 43-millimetre envelope made of Carbonox with a steel crown protected by a contoured part of the envelope. The screw-down steel caseback is decorated with an engraving resembling a compass with an image of a globe with indications of the world's directions. Water resistance of 10 ATM allows swimming and diving without an oxygen cylinder with the watch on hand. The operation of the model is based on a Swiss quartz movement. There are three models in the line. Blackout with a black dial and grey indexes and hands, with a dark green dial and sand-coloured indexes, and with a black dial and sand-coloured hands and indexes. All models feature a solid plastic strap with a fabric textured effect on the top. The last model also comes with an additional sand -coloured NATO-type strap with black stitching.
