Owning an automatic watch is considered prestigious - the complexity of the movement is tantamount to great effort that was put into the creation of it. It always takes a lot of time to make such a movement. This effort is clearly visible in high quality and reliability of the watch.

Watches with self-winding movement are considered to be the most authentic devices. They work similarly to mechanical watches - the mainspring stores energy which is later transferred through the movement gears. This makes the hands turn on the dial. Contrary to mechanical watches, automatic ones do not need any manual winding. All they need is the motion of the watch wearer's arm (for example during walking.) When fully wound, most automatic watches can run for around 40 hours. Due to the fact that automatic watches are generally not as precise as quartz ones, manufactures use jewels to increase movement accuracy.
