In addition to models with a distinctly elegant pedigree, you will also find proposals for more sporty pieces, where automatic mechanisms are designed to measure time accurately in difficult conditions where other types of mechanisms would be less effective. These are situations such as deep-sea diving or extreme expeditions. Such timepieces include models from brands such as Adriatica, Atlantic and Doxa.
How does an automatic watch work?
A watch with an automatic movement has a very similar operating principle to models with a mechanical movement, where a slowly rotating spring generates the energy needed to set in motion the gear wheel that controls the dial hands. The difference is that a manual-winding model needs to be wound from time to time to maintain a safe power reserve, while in automatic-winding we don't have to do this. In such a watch, technology is responsible for winding the spring, in which special ballasts twist the spring automatically with every, even the slightest, movement of the hand.
Such a solution allows us to effectively maintain a long gait reserve - usually up to 40 hours - with minimal effort. It is enough to wear the watch on the hand. In addition, to make timekeeping more precise, special bearing stones are used to calibrate the correct time.
Popular brands of automatic watches
Automatic mechanisms in wristwatches can be found from leading manufacturers such as Citizen, Seiko, Orient and Orient Star. High-tech models, such as the Grand or Prospex from Seiko, have up to 72 hours of walk reserve. Of other equally highly regarded brands, we can also find Vostok and Stormman timepieces.
