Sports watches often offer a wide range of functions, which happen to be really helpful during the workout, allowing for precise time measurement. Besides the popular chronograph (stopwatch), there is another interesting function, namely a tachymeter, which can measure our speed.
It is an inestimable function, especially helpful during running, swimming or biking. Usually, you can find it on the bezel or around the dial of the watch. This function allows us to simply check our speed on the length of 1 kilometre or 1 mile (with units km/h and mph).
A tachymeter is a scale, usually based on the bezel of a watch, which can measure the average speed. It connects with the chronograph in order to work precisely.
In order to measure our speed on the distance of 1000 meters, we need to turn on the chronograph - its hand will measure the time. After 1 km, we have to stop the chronograph and the tachymeter automatically should tell us the average speed. So if we cover a distance of 1000 meters in 20 seconds, the function should show us 180 km/h.
If you want to see how a tachymeter works, watch the video below:
A tachymeter scale can be mainly found in sports watches, with a typical design of the dial and bezel. The most sporty-looking models with tachymeter are Emporio Armani watches with steel bracelets and timepieces offered by the Japanese brand Lorus (Sport series).
Sometimes, we can also find a tachymeter scale in elegant-looking watches, with steel bracelets or leather straps. Among them we would like to focus on Casio Edifice watches, in which the function of tachymeter is surrounded by elegant design. This scale can be also found in stylish Zeppelin 100 Years watches - vintage models, which are considered to be ageless timepieces.
