Traditional watches with classic designs can truly captivate us with their exquisite aesthetics, turning into adornments that enhance both our everyday clothes and more formal looks. Yet, certain watches dare to defy the conventional norms – and because of this, they grab a lot more attention than typical timepieces. Discover the extremely stylish skeleton and semi-skeleton watches.

What are skeleton and semi-skeleton watches?

A popular feature in modern watches is the small, usually round open heart window on the dial. It lets you catch a glimpse inside the watch. Skeleton and semi-skeleton watches go a step further. These ones have a transparent dial under the crystal, showing off most of the inner workings (mostly hand-wound and automatic movements). Sometimes, a watch might not even have a dial – instead, it uses openwork bridges that are often artistically designed to show off as much as possible. They might also use a transparent case back. The name says it all – skeleton watches are simply watches where you can see the skeleton, the core structure of the watch.

Skeleton vs semi-skeleton watch. Which one is better?

How do semi-skeleton watches differ from skeleton watches? While semi-skeleton watches have a transparent dial, they are fitted with a traditional case back. In some cases, the name "semi-skeleton" is used by manufacturers to describe timepieces with an open heart window only. It is worth bearing in mind that even skeleton watches sometimes use a dial that can only be partially seen through. This untransparent part usually features hour indices (optionally, additional markings such as tachometric or telemetric scales). However, even though these devices might reveal less, they don't necessarily lose their impact. Men's and women's models from leading manufacturers still stand at the cutting edge of watchmaking design.

Skeleton watches – which ones are worth considering?

Watches with transparent dials and case backs are offered by leading manufacturers, including Italian Locman, German Carl von Zeyten and American Fossil. We have selected three models that may appeal to you!

Transparent dials and openwork bridges — the beauty of watchmaking craftsmanship in skeleton and semi-skeleton watches

Skeleton and semi-skeleton watches are original and fashionable timepieces that attract attention thanks to their visible watch movement. Their transparent dials and openwork bridges offer the opportunity to admire and appreciate the precision and beauty of watchmaking craftsmanship. The differences between the two types of watches lie mainly in the presence of a traditional case back (this applies to semi-skeleton watches) and a transparent case back (this applies to skeleton watches). Whether you choose a skeleton or semi-skeleton watch, you can be sure that you will be wearing a true work of watchmaking art on your wrist.
