Until not so long ago, the thinnest record holder was the Octo Finissimo Ultra watch of the thickness of 1.8 mm. It was presented by the Bulgari brand at the Watches & Wonders fair in Geneva in March 2022. However, this triumph did not last too long, as just three months after this achievement, the prestigious Richard Mille Manufacture, working with the legendary motoring brand Ferrari, achieved something almost impossible. A spectacular watchmaking masterpiece entered the industry - the RM UP-01 Ferrari premium watch of the thickness of 1.75 mm. Thus, it has become the thinnest watch ever produced.
Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferrari - world record for the ultra-thin mechanism
The Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferrari represents unrivalled manufacture, full functionality and premium sports craftsmanship. As befits a top competitor in the premier league, this thinnest watch represents the excellence, precision, reliability and sporting power of its proprietary manual-winding mechanical movement with the innovative, slimmed-down design of the RMUP-01 calibre, which is just 1.18 mm thick! This special new type of escapement with a titanium balance wheel was developed by Audemars Piguet Le Locle and Richard Mille.
The specification of the RMUP-01 manual movement includes:
- ultraflat manual winding movement with hours, minutes and function selector,
- power reserve of 45 hours (± 10%),
- 23 jewels,
- frequency: 28’800 vph (4 Hz),
- balance, baseplate and bridges are made of grade 5 titanium - the alloy is biocompatible, highly corrosion-resistant and ultralight (90% grade 5 titanium, 5,6% aluminium and 4% vanadium),
- balance spring: AK 3.
RM UP-01 Ferrari watch - an elegant finish to an ultra-slim case
After more than 6,000 hours of development and laboratory testing, the Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferrari watch was created. It is an extraordinary marvel of engineering and the above-average skills of skilled engineers and designers. The prestigious Swiss Made manufacturer decided to go for a classic solution, i.e. placing the mechanism inside the titanium case, rather than integrating the mechanism into the outer elements of the case, as in most models of this type. Thanks to that, the calibre RM UP-01 has a water resistance rating of 10 metres and can withstand accelerations of over 5,000 g’s.
The RMUP-01 watch features an elegant and super-slim design accentuated by a polished caseback and satin-finished bezel. The sporty aesthetic and harmony is completed by the laser-engraved iconic horse with the Ferrari logo on the front of the case. The idea of creating an ultra-thin model is completed by the case with a black rubber strap fastened with a velcro system.
