Eterna Swiss watches – a history founded on tradition, innovation and precision

Although Eterna is a well-known and respected watch manufacturer, it’s worth briefly running over the brand’s history. The company was founded in 1856 in the Swiss town of Grenchen by Dr. Josef Girard and schoolteacher Urs Schild. In the 19th century the brand was primarily known for making movements for its own timepieces and other Swiss watch companies (ETA, a renowned Swiss movement manufacturer, was founded by Eterna). Soon, however, the company began developing and producing pocket and wristwatches.

Thanks to the continuous development of the company, the improvement of existing components and the introduction of new innovations, the manufacturer revolutionised the art of watchmaking in a fairly short time and became a pioneer in the industry. In the early 1930s, Eterna and ETA were separated into two entities. This, however, hasn’t prevented the brand from striving for success.

Creativity, tradition and the use of new technologies have been the hallmark of Eterna and all its watches for more than a century. Even after Eterna was taken over by Porsche Design in 1995, it remained a separate part of the group, retaining its individual character of traditional craftsmanship and historical watchmaking values. That’s why users from all over the world can now enjoy original Swiss Made watches with almost 200 years of history.

The tradition of aviation watches: Eterna Heritage 1940 and Zeppelin 100 Years

Aviation watches are distinctive pieces characterised by pilot-inspired design. They are true classics. You must admit there is something special in their traditional workmanship, timeless vintage style and robust construction – this particularly applies to watches that refer to the traditional measuring instruments of yesteryear. No wonder, aviation watches continue to enjoy enduring popularity among watch collectors. The companies are reinterpreting the characteristic design of the 1930s and 1940s in their own individual way. At the same time they ensure the complications are practical and the whole look strikes a balance between history and modernity. Every pilot, lover of aviation and fan of reliable watches values the durability of the materials used, the convenience of use, the precision of the movement and the ability to quickly read the time and make navigational calculations in any difficult conditions. These features and qualities are a must-have for users of aviation watches. Eterna and Zeppelin and the brands that follow these rules and meet customers’ needs.

Zegarki Eterna Heritage 1940 Chronograph Telemeter 7950.78.55.1261 oraz Zeppelin 100 Yahre Chronograph Alarm 7680-2

Eterna Heritage 1940 Chronograph Telemeter 7950.78.55.1261 is a pilot watch that meets all the requirements of the so-called "true aviation watches". Its timeless elegant design impresses lovers of history, classic style, premium timepieces and Swiss workmanship. The watch costs around €4,000, which seems to be a fair price given the materials used. If, however, this amount exceeds your budget, you may choose a more affordable watch. Our recommendation is Zeppelin 100 Years Chronograph Alarm 7680-2. You can get this aviation watch for around €330 or less. Both models reflect the retro style of the first half of the 20th century, inspired by the historic timepieces and navigation instruments used in aircrafts. Eterna Heritage 1940 and Zeppelin 100 Years are powered by precise Swiss movement and are equipped with a chronograph, tachymeter and telemeter. Both models are distinguished by a classic, elegant design. They are fitted with a black leather strap with white stitching and polished case made of 316L stainless steel. The only significant difference, apart from the price, is the use of two different movements. The Eterna watch features an in-house movement Calibre Maison Eterna 3916A, while the Zeppelin watch uses a Ronda 5130.D quartz movement with an alarm function. Some people prefer a mechanical movement to a quartz movement for some reasons. A battery-powered watch with a built-in alarm can turn out to be a blessing for those who don’t wear watches every single day. We are certain that the Zeppelin watch will satisfy the needs of professional pilots, lovers of modern watchmaking and fans of aviation watches

Sophisticated and classy design combined with a futuristic style and simple construction is something that will highlight chic menswear, exclusivity and add a fashionable touch to your outfits. More and more often, watch brands decide to interweave traditional workmanship with distinctive, modern elements. This is clearly evident in two premium watches: Eterna Eternity for Him Quartz 2710.41.80.1736 and D1 Milano Ultra Thin Panarea UTBU04. The protection of the analogue dials is provided by a hard sapphire crystal with anti-reflection. What makes these watches different? Well, the differences are evident in the details of the case, the type of quartz movement used (the Eterna Eternity watch uses a Swiss ETA movement with a date complication, while the D1 Milano is powered by a Japanese Citizen Miyota calibre). Of course there is also a difference in price. This Eterna model is the least expensive Eterna watch on our list as it costs less than €1,000.
