Montjuic - We Are Racing is a new watch brand with a distinct concept making a bold debut in the watch market. Originating in Barcelona, the manufacturer creates watches inspired by motorsports. Each element is carefully designed and reflects the unmistakable DNA derived from racing. So, how did this original brand come to life?
Father and son Resendo Rabat and Tendu Rabat have been operating in the watch industry in Spain for more than twenty years. They’re distributors of brands such as Vostok Europe, U-Boat and Porche Design. Their family also includes a chain of exclusive boutiques that sell, among others, such brands like Rolex, IWC and Breguet. The men had long planned to launch their own watch brand on the market, but much of the impetus for change came from Eduardo Mendeza in 2019. He is a motorsport enthusiast, dedicating 30 years of his life to building racing vehicles including the Italian motorbike brand MV Agusta. The Rabat family was no stranger to the subject, as they competed in car and motorbike racing with considerable success.
Mendeza, as it turned out, had always dreamt of creating his own sports-inspired watch brand, but lacked the support of professionals. It’s easy to imagine that the combination of the shared passions of Resendo, Tendu Rabat and Eduardo Mendeza resulted in the creation of Montjuic, a motorsport-inspired brand. Its name comes from the name of the legendary racetrack that runs up the Barcelona hill of the same name. It was on this track that races of various ranks were held between 1932 and 1986. The track hosted the Spanish Grand Prix. It was also where Lella Lombardia became the first woman to score points in the Formula One World Championship classification. Additionally, the site played host to the 24-hour motorbike races.
The brand currently boasts 3 core lines: Speed Mecaquartz, Speed GMT and Speed Chrono. Their cases are made of satin-finished stainless steel or PVD-coated black stainless steel and are shaped to resemble a car piston. The case is well-shaped so that it sits comfortably on the wrist. The rubber and silicone straps come with a quick-pin system. The caseback features an engraving of the Montjuic circuit, while the crown is designed to resemble a gearbox. Each model is fitted with sapphire glass with anti-reflective coating on both sides and Super-LumiNova hands. The watches boast interesting colours. Alongside classic black, the collections embrace vibrant hues reminiscent of racing teams: Ferrari red, Williams blue, McLaren orange, or the iconic Martini stripes. You'll also find the rich tones of British green and the colours inspired by the Bahrain circuit.
The watches from the Speed GMT collection use the Ronda quartz movement and the remaining models are powered by Japanese mecaquartz movements. These timepieces seamlessly blend the smoothness of the hand movement as in mechanical watches with the precision characteristic of quartz watches. The models also come in an unusual box. Housed in a cardboard box, a steel barrel reminiscent of a fuel transport container stores the watch. This serves a dual purpose, functioning both as protective packaging and a convenient carrying case. Furthermore, the package includes a branded soft cloth for cleaning the watch. With the exception of the Speed GMT series, each watch is complemented by an extra silicone strap in a colour related to the model's dial.
The brand's most recent venture involves a collaboration with the Italian design company MOMO DESIGN. This partnership has resulted in the creation of the Momodesign collection. Crafted from carbon fibre, the dials of these watches stand out with distinct colours and arrangements, which sets them apart from other Montjuic models. The collection offers both chronographs as well as three-handed watches. Customers can choose from either steel cases or cases coated with black PVD.
Montjuic - We Are Racing emerges as a brand-new player in the world of watches, establishing its identity with a truly distinctive concept. The Barcelona-based manufacturer creates Montjuic watches inspired by motorsports and undoubtedly does so with passion and commitment. This is definietely reflected in the refined design of the watches. Each element of these timepieces shows the brand's deep connection to the world of motorsport. To sum up, Montjuic watches are a compelling choice for watch enthusiasts who appreciate dynamic, sporty aesthetics.
