The Casio brand is celebrating the 50th anniversary of a unique model. In 1974, the manufacturer introduced its first wristwatch to the world. The model introduced a breath of innovation to the watchmaking market, as it eliminated the need for monthly date corrections thanks to its automatic calendar function. To mark the passing of half a century since this event, Casio is presenting a limited edition version of the Casiotron refreshed and updated with modern features.
The first Casiotron was unique in that, in addition to being the first Casio watch, it was also one of the first electronic watches ever made. Such a timepiece was a big novelty for consumers and quickly gained popularity. Casio was one of the first manufacturers to be able to offer such a product, and this was thanks to its experience in manufacturing electronic calculators.
Now, to honour the legend, the Casio Casiotron TRN-50 model has been created, which is confusingly similar to the original. However, it features several modern technologies for greater practicality and convenience. A radio time synchronisation system is provided by receiving time calibration signals transmitted from six stations around the world. The Mobile Link function, combined with Bluetooth technology, enables the watch to be linked to a smartphone to provide precise timekeeping and automatic time zone updates. What's more, the Casiotron TRN-50 has the ability to be recharged thanks to solar power - Tough Solar.
As with the original version from 50 years ago, the refreshed Casio watch features a screw-tightening lid. It was made of glass to allow radio waves to be received via a built-in antenna. The symbol visible on the caseback has been redesigned to include a 50th anniversary graphic and a limited edition number. There will be 4,000 copies of this special model available on the market. The envelope and bracelet are made of stainless steel and the display is covered by mineral glass. The water resistance of the watch is estimated at 5 ATM, which protects it in the event of a major splash.
In an effort to make efficient use of the world's limited resources, the Casio brand has reassessed the packaging of its standard watch collection. By adopting paper as the primary raw material, the manufacturer has managed to achieve a reduction in plastic consumption of around 82% compared to conventional packaging. The box of this anniversary Casiotron model is also made of eco-friendly plastic-free paper.
