Keeping up with the ever-evolving world of electronic equipment can be quite overwhelming, especially when it comes to sports watches. With each season, manufacturers release newer and more advanced models, making it challenging to keep track of the latest updates and features. So, how not to get lost? I’m here to help you. Today, I'll be comparing two popular models from the well-known brand Garmin: the Fenix 7 and the Fenix 6. Get a better understanding of which one would be the right choice for your needs. So, if you're interested in learning more, keep reading!
Both the Garmin Fenix 6 and 7 feature a transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP) display. However, the 7 series comes equipped with a touch-sensitive display, whereas the 6 does not. Additionally, the newer generation boasts a range of enhanced map-related features — every variant of the 7 series supports them, whereas only the Pro and Sapphire versions did so for the predecessor. The new Garmin watch also allows maps of different continents to be downloaded via Wi-Fi connectivity. While both the Fenix 6 and 7 come with preloaded Topoactive Europe maps, these are only available on selected models. On the 6, only the Pro and Sapphire versions have access to these maps, while on the 7, it's limited to the Solar Sapphire model.
Also new to the Fenix 7 is multiplatform satellite connectivity (Solar Sapphire only), an LED torch (X only) and the ability to configure watch settings in real time in the Connect app. The Garmin Elevatewrist heart rate sensor has also been improved.
The Fenix 7 has a few new features, including multi-band satellite tracking (Solar Sapphire only) and the LED flashlight, which is only available on the X version. Additionally, users can now configure watch settings in real-time using the Connect app, which is a convenient upgrade. Another improvement in the Fenix 7 is the Garmin Elevate wrist heart rate sensor, which has been enhanced for even more accurate readings.
In terms of battery life, the Fenix 7 comes out on top, but that's not to say that the Fenix 6 performs poorly in this aspect.
Garmin Pay contactless payment is present in both the Fenix 6 and Fenix 7. Additionally, both watches will support music playback, but the Fenix 6 will only have this feature in its Pro and Sapphire variants. On the other hand, only the newer series will have features such as hydration monitoring, Health Snapshot, Realtime stamina and access to Connect IQ directly from the device.
When it comes to appearance, the differences are rather subtle. Garmin puts great care into the construction of all their products, so both the Fenix 6 and Fenix 7 are crafted from sturdy, long-lasting materials. The sizes of the cases vary depending on the model, with the "s" variant having a diameter of 42 mm, the standard variant measuring 47 mm, and the "x" variant measuring 51 mm. However, the results are the same for both the Fenix 6 and Fenix 7. The display size and resolution are also identical. The weight of the products differs slightly by only a few grams.
There is only a small price difference between the standard versions of both Garmin watches. The availability of the Fenix 6 model for sale is diminishing, indicating the manufacturer's intention to gradually phase it out of the market to make way for newer models.
When deciding which Garmin watch to choose, consider your priorities. If you're a budget-conscious sports enthusiast, particularly a runner, the Garmin Fenix 6 is still an excellent choice. It may not have all the latest updates, but it's a highly functional piece of equipment that will get the job done. However, if staying up to date with the latest features is a priority and you're okay with spending a little more, the Fenix 7 is the way to go.
