The G-Shock Street Spirit watch series draws inspiration from street culture. Each of the five watches in the series is covered with unique graffiti that resembles a street artist's work. This effect makes them wearable art pieces that make a statement on the wrist.
Today, graffiti has become an inseparable part of cities and suburbs. The origins of this art can be traced back to the 1960s and 1970s. The forerunner of graffiti was an American called Cornbread. He painted the name of his beloved on the walls of his native Philadelphia. He wasn’t the one. Shortly after him, people started to do the same. Simple words turned into intricate images that became an integral part of hip-hop culture. It was a manifestation of rebellion, a desire to express and popularise important matters.
For quite a long time, graffiti was seen as vandalism, so increasingly severe sanctions were imposed on the creators. The breakthrough came in the 1980s, when graffiti made its way into galleries and gained recognition. The early 21st was heavily influenced by the artist who signs himself as Banksy. His identification mark is the details created with stencils. He addresses social and political issues in his works. Graffiti and street art became a kind of inspiration for the G-Shock Street Spirit watch series. Each of the five models is distinctive in terms of design and colour.
The G-Shock GA-110SS-1AER model is covered in patterns, more precisely in decorative letters. It boasts a vibrant combination of purple, black and white. The wall surface is achieved through Garal colour moulding. The marbled effect was created thanks to the combination of different colours of resin. In addition to its visual appeal, this model is equipped with a number of useful functions such as world time (48 cities), a 1/100-second stopwatch, a timer, five alarms, a calendar and an auto LED light. In addition, the watch is shock-resistant and water-resistant up to 20 BAR. Its magnetic resistance, however, is in accordance with ISO 764, certifying that the watch is protected against magnetic fields.
The G-Shock Street Spirit DW-5000SS-1ER watch is a subdued model in black and silver. The base of the watch is translucent resin. A new method, stamping, was used to obtain the intricate brick pattern characterised by reliefs and cut-outs. A useful feature is the Alarm Flash, the watch not only makes a sound but also flashes. A calendar up to the year 2039 is also built in.
