Italian watch brand Venezianico is launching the Bucintoro 1969 chronograph edition, limited to 69 pieces, which pays homage to the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing. The working watch is powered by the unique Lemania 1873 movement used by NASA personnel. Its predecessor, the Calibre 321, was indeed the first mechanism to reach the surface of the moon.

  • Venezianico presents the Bucintoro 1969 model, limited to 69 pieces.
  • The watch features the carefully restored iconic Lemania 1873 movement.
  • The model comes with two straps (leather and rubber) and a Canova bracelet.

69 Lemania Swiss mechanisms undergoing restoration

To get their hands on 69 pieces of this mechanism, the brand 's founders Venezianico Alberto and Alessandro Morelli travelled to Switzerland. When they managed to find a sufficient number of them, they set about carefully restoring them so that, after six months, they could be brought back to life and ready for reassembly. The Lemania 1873 mechanism has a balance wheel that oscillates at a frequency of 21600 oscillations per hour and offers a walk reserve of about 40 hours. Its operation can be observed through the transparent caseback.

The countdown function of the Venezianico Bucintoro 1969 watch

Like the Cape Canaveral, the launch site of NASA's Apollo flights, the Bucintoro 1969's internal equipment includes various references to the launch sequence. We are referring, for example, to the unique countdown function. This includes an additional tachymetric scale with markers corresponding to key countdown stages, such as 'Preparing for launch' in T-60, followed by the actual countdown in T-10, 'Engine ignition' in T-5, and then 'Launch', which completes the countdown. Once zero is reached, the chronograph measures speed using the tachometer.

The chronograph sub dial is decorated with a pattern reminiscent of the surface of the moon, complete with craters and a distinctive dark grey regolith shade, made using advanced 3D printing techniques. The rest of the dial is decorated with bar-shaped indexes and gold-coloured hands - a colour alluding to the 'golden age of space exploration'. Sporting a 316 stainless steel envelope with a diameter of 42 mm, the watch also has a steel plate located on the side of the envelope at 8 o'clock with an engraved limitation number. The hands and circular markers above the indexes have BGW9 Super-LumiNova coating. The dial is protected by a convex sapphire crystal glass.

Dedicated box, 2 straps and Canova bracelet included.

The model's 10 ATM water resistance means that rain or showers pose no threat, and you can even surface swim with it. The watch is delivered in a handcrafted walnut wood box, which was made in Friuli Venezia Giulia. It has two inner levels. The first contains the watch, two straps (rubber and Italian genuine leather) and the tools necessary to replace them, while the second level houses the iconic Canova bracelet.
