Are you going to buy a quartz watch? Do you want to know why quartz watches have become the most famous watches in the world? Read our article and find out why quartz timepieces are worth buying.

The history of quartz watches

The history of quartz watches is not as long as you may think. The first commercial quartz wristwatch, named the Astron, was released on 25 December 1969 by manufacturer Seiko. This model marked the beginning of manufacturing exclusive timepieces, which now are mainly associated with solar-powered watches. Shortly afterwards, the American company Hamilton produced the first watch with a digital display instead of an analogue dial. The watch was called Pulsar. Both quartz watches and timepieces with a digital display were innovative and high-priced at that time. For sure, they were much more expensive than mechanical watches. The quartz watches reached the peak of popularity in the 1970s. Switzerland, which was the only country whose industry didn’t suffer during the crisis of World War II, monopolised the watch sales market and dictated inflated prices. Thanks to the use of new types of movements and a reduction of their production costs, their domination has eventually come to the end.

The features of quartz movements

It’s commonly believed that quartz watches, compared to mechanical watches with manual or automatic winding, are of lower quality. This is a wrong impression, as both types have advantages and disadvantages. One advantage of quartz watches is that there is no need for constant owner’s attention. They can be left in storage or only worn occasionally to run. And when the battery is dead, it’s enough to buy a new one. Mechanical watches, on the other hand, need to be worn all the time or wound regularly in order to make them tick.

A great benefit of quartz watches is also the accuracy. Quartz watches are powered by a battery which sends a constant electric current through the quartz crystal. The electrified crystal produces vibrations that make the movement oscillate. Thus, the watches are extremely accurate. In addition, the keeping of quartz watches can be corrected via built-in modules, such as a radio transmitter, GPS or Bluetooth. They make the operation of the quartz watches easier.

In electrically powered quartz watches, it’s also possible to replace the traditional dial with a display. This allows you to significantly increase the functionality of the watch as it can be equipped with a calendar, heart rate monitor or music player. More and more watches are available in colourful and clear displays that enhance practicality of use.

Quartz watches have one serious disadvantage - limited battery life. That is why the battery needs to be replaced from time to time. There are a few types of watch batteries, including solar cells. They convert light energy into electrical energy. A quartz watch that is powered by such batteries stores the generated energy in a capacitor. When the watch is fully charged, it can run for up to six months in total darkness.

Why should you buy a quartz watch?

Quartz watches are the most accurate watches on the market, so you don’t have to worry about their measurement deviations. These types of watches suit every budget and are available in many designs and colours. High-quality models feature the famous 'Swiss Made' designation, which means they comply with the top Swiss standards. Such models include brands like Atlantic and Adriatica, which are equipped with reliable Ronda quartz watch movements as well as top Japanese brands, including Seiko and Casio, which feature the Miyota movements.
