The history of quartz watches is not as long as you may think. The first commercial quartz wristwatch, named the Astron, was released on 25 December 1969 by manufacturer Seiko. It’s commonly believed that quartz watches, compared to mechanical watches with manual or automatic winding, are of lower quality. This is a wrong impression, as both types have advantages and disadvantages. One advantage of quartz watches is that there is no need for constant owner’s attention. They can be left in storage or only worn occasionally to run. And when the battery is dead, it’s enough to buy a new one. Mechanical watches, on the other hand, need to be worn all the time or wound regularly in order to make them tick.

A great benefit of quartz watches is also the accuracy. Quartz watches are powered by a battery which sends a constant electric current through the quartz crystal. The electrified crystal produces vibrations that make the movement oscillate. Thus, the watches are extremely accurate. In addition, the keeping of quartz watches can be corrected via built-in modules, such as a radio transmitter, GPS or Bluetooth. They make the operation of the quartz watches easier.

In electrically powered quartz watches, it’s also possible to replace the traditional dial with a display. This allows you to significantly increase the functionality of the watch as it can be equipped with a calendar, heart rate monitor or music player.
