To reduce CO2 emissions and motivate people to cycle or run to work, Suunto announced the inaugural Suunto Commuting Day on Thursday, 22nd September.
It's easy! All you have to do is record your route to work using your Suunto watch or Hammerhead bike computer and tag the activity as a commute in the Suunto app. After the event, we will show you how much CO2 emissions our community has saved.
Suunto is a Finnish brand with 86 years of experience, producing GPS sports watches and accessories that support users in adventure and exploring. At the same time, Suunto strives to support its community by providing solutions that help in everyday life. With a focus on sustainability, Suunto has given its users options such as tracking their human-powered commutes and, as an added motivation, the ability to visualise how much CO2 emissions they are able to reduce by choosing to commute by bicycle, for example, instead of a fossil fuel vehicle.
"One single bike ride to work may not seem like a big commitment," - says Suunto Sustainability manager Heidi Heikkinen. "But once you do that on a regular basis, you will start to see how it all adds up. And, when looking at the entire community, it is clear that thousands of people choosing human-powered commutes can definitely make a difference. Especially knowing that transportation is one of the biggest sources of emissions."
You don’t even need to have a Suunto watch or a Suunto-compatible Hammerhead bike computer to track your commute - you can also use the Suunto app to track it for free.
To start tracking, you don't need to do more than ride, run or walk from point A to point B and record your activity. The first time you track your commuting activity, you will be asked if you would like to activate the automatic tagging with the 'commute' tag. The Suunto app can automatically tag one-way trips that start and end at least 500 metres (0.3 miles) apart as commutes.
The reduced CO2 emissions for a single activity will be shown in the workout summary and the new commute widget on the app's homepage will show your monthly total CO2 saved.
Promoting sustainable daily choices is part of Suunto's commitment to being a more responsible company. Today, more than 90% of Suunto watches are made in its factory in Vantaa, Finland. Since 2021, its headquarters and factory have used 100% renewable energy. To keep things transparent, the first annual sustainability report has been recently published. You can read it here.
"Suunto’s approach to sustainability is to increase positive effects, not just to reduce the negative ones. These are called, respectively, our handprint and footprint. We aim to tread lightly, and be a force for good. We believe in the power of community. Together, we can affect change by raising our voices and taking real action. Our ambassadors and our community care as much as we do," - says Brand manager Antti Laiho.
Suunto is more than just a manufacturer of sports watches. The company is synonymous with stories of adventure enthusiasts, long tradition, Finnish design and reliability. It all started more than 80 years ago when Finnish engineer and orienteering runner Tuomas Vohlonen invented a patent for a liquid-filled compass with a more accurate and stable needle than those previously used.
With this invention, since 1936 Suunto has been navigating not only athletes and travellers, but also soldiers and sailors. Today, the company focuses on continuous development and innovations. As a result, it has released numerous excellent outdoor watches that support professional athletes and sports enthusiasts.
